Mentoring Services
Once I had the realization several years ago that I could now solve almost any behavior problem brought to me, I made the decision to begin mentoring. I was, and remain, concerned about the state of parrot behavior consulting today for there are few ways to get the necessary education. If I can pass on to others what I have learned during my 28 years of behavior consulting, I can magnify the help I might be able to offer to parrots during my lifetime.
The mentorship is loosely structured and self-paced. The majority of instruction is done one-on-one with me, going over real-life cases, in hour-long sessions. However, there is also a group meeting every two weeks, during which we take a deep dive into specific subjects for two hours. Examples include: the Constructional Approach, parrot vocalizations and body language, individual species profiles, and training approaches for different behaviors.
I work to ensure that consultants in the program also get the knowledge they need in three other primary areas: (1) applied behavior analysis, (2) positive reinforcement training experience, and (3) hands-on experience with a variety of parrot species. This may include optional attendance at on-line courses with other instructors or at hands-on training programs such as Natural Encounters, Inc.
As their knowledge grows, I work closely with each mentee to decide when they are ready to begin taking cases. I then continue to provide support whenever questions occur. In this way, mentees are able to grow into their consultancies with a firm hand of support behind them. If they run into a situation they haven’t encountered before, I’m only a phone call or Zoom session away.
Consultants working with me are expected to uphold the highest of ethical standards in their treatment of all creatures, including people. They accept that positive reinforcement is the gold standard for changing behavior. This includes the treatment of human beings. Communication is always best handled with a touch of humor and heaps of compassion. My mentees demonstrate that towards each other and as a result, we have a strong supportive group.
If you are interested, please email me with a written introduction. Tell me about yourself, your background and aspirations, your experience with parrots, why you might want to go into this field of work, and what you desire in a mentorship. The next step is to schedule an interview on Zoom with me. I hope to hear from you! Email: pamelaclarkcvt@gmail.com
